PROTEST: Police Arrest 52 Shi’ite, Recover Petrol Bombs

The police in Abuja on Wednesday dispersed protesting members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria otherwise known as Shi’ites with tear gas and arrested 52 of them at Area 3, Garki, Abuja.

The force explained that the Shi’ite members attacked citizens including police operatives, adding that some improvised petrol bombs, stones and catapults were recovered from them.

The Federal Capital Territory Police spokesman, Anjuguri Manzah, said in a statement that the protesters, who were demanding the release of their leader, Ibrahim El-ZakyZaky, also damaged police patrol vans.

He explained that the action of the Shi’ite members was unlawful and constituted a serious security threat to the peace of the FCT, noting that the police would never condone such unruly acts.
